Another 5 star review
CODA’s production of ‘Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ was a great success in a number of ways.
Not only did we manage to reinvigorate interest in South Norwood’s Stanley Halls as a venue for theatrical productions by bringing in an almost entirely new, and impressively large, audience, but we received the highest levels of critical approval for a show that was amongst our most challenging to date.
Audiences were unanimous in their praise for Paul Longhurst’s production of the Stephen Sondheim ‘musical thriller’ widely regarded as being as hard to stage as it was to perform. Longhurst elicited some stunning performances, not just from the principal actors but from an ensemble who were on stage for almost the entire 120+ minutes.

Robert Randall’s impressive direction of the complex score and Alistair Kennard’s innovative set in an uncomfortably confined space (with far from state-of-the-art facilities), have been rightly acclaimed by many who had seen the show performed by a number of companies (both professional and amateur) and come to the conclusion that ours was the best of
the lot !
But don’t just take our word for it. The review by the Croydon Advertiser’s esteemed theatre critic Theo Spring provides a glowing endorsement for CODA.
